GAVI, officially Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, is a supranational public-private partnership based in Geneva, Switzerland.
Gavi was founded in 1999 under its original name, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations, subsequently launching in 2000.[1] It was formed as a successor to the Children’s Vaccine Initiative, which was itself founded following the World Summit for Children held in New York in September 1990.[2] United States President Bill Clinton announced a $50 million investment into the Global Fund for Children's Vaccines “to support GAVI's work.” Early board members included Carol Bellamy, then-Executive Director of UNICEF.[3]
Gavi launched the Innovation for Uptake, Scale and Equity in Immunisation (INFUSE) program in 2016 in Davos, Switzerland.[4]
On December 11, 2018, Gavi and Mastercard announced a partnership to increase immunization rates in five countries by introducing "a card with a digital immunization record, to each participating child’s caregiver."[5]
On December 11, 2020, Gavi entered into a purchase agreement on behalf of the COVAX facility with the Government of South Africa to acquire around 12 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines.[6]
On January 19, 2023, Gavi launched "INFUSE 2.0" to "accelerate immunisation systems upgrades" and "to promote access to new and under-used vaccines and immunisation innovations."[4:1] The program plans to raise $500 million in funding by 2030, starting with support from Google.org, the Coca-Cola Foundation and Alwaleed Philanthropies.
