Johnson & Johnson (J&J) is an American multinational pharmaceutical company based in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
Johnson & Johnson acquired Tibotec in April 2002.[1]
In May 2002, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation purchased stock in Johnson & Johnson.[2]
On November 17, 2015, the Ugandan Academy for Health Innovation and Impact was inaugurated at Makerere University as a partnership between Johnson & Johnson, Janssen, the Ministry of Health of Uganda and the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI).[3]
Johnson & Johnson acquired Actelion in 2017 for $30 billion.[4] J&J was a Bronze-level sponsor for BioFIT 2017.[5]
In early 2020, the anti-heartburn medication famotidine (manufactured by Johnson & Johnson under the brand name Pepcid) was reportedly identified by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA)'s Discovery of Medical Countermeasures Against Novel Entities (DOMANE) program as a potential treatment against the then-"emerging" SARS-CoV-2 virus.[6][7]
Near the end of March 2020, Johnson & Johnson announced its participation in the COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator alongside a consortium of other life science companies.[8]
Johnson & Johnson was a supporter of the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund (SRF),[9] an early initiative to fund the World Health Organization's COVID-19 response, including to “suppress transmission, reduce exposure, counter misinformation, protect the vulnerable, reduce mortality and morbidity and accelerate equitable access to new COVID-19 tools.”[10]
On April 23, 2020, Emergent BioSolutions announced it had entered a $135 million agreement with Johnson & Johnson to "provide contract development and manufacturing services" for the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine.[11]
On July 6, 2020, Emergent BioSolutions announced an additional five-year contract with Johnson & Johnson, building on the prior agreement.[12] After the first two years, Emergent would "provide a flexible capacity deployment model to support additional drug substance batches annually."[13]
From August 17-20, 2020, Johnson & Johnson sponsored a conference called The Critical Public Health Value of Vaccines – Tackling Issues of Access and Hesitancy held by the Forum on Microbial Threats.[14]
On September 24, 2020, several employees of J&J published a pre-print which found "no evidence of a reduced risk of COVID-19 outcomes among hospitalized COVID-19 patients who used famotidine" compared to those who did not take the drug, and compared to other treatments.[15]
Johnson & Johnson provided funding for the COVID-19 Vaccine Education and Equity Project alongside Novartis and Pfizer.[16] The campaign was launched on December 2, 2020 under the auspices of communicating information about “authorized and approved” COVID-19 vaccines, and to promote “inclusion and dialogue”.[17]
In late 2021, Johnson & Johnson neared completion of a deal to have Aspen Pharmacare manufacture the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine product in Africa.[18]
The company is ranked in the top 10 “Most Penalized Parent Companies”, with a total of $14,760,947,763 paid in financial penalties.[19]
