Dr. Melvin Robert Bruchet is a retired Canadian family physician based in British Columbia.[1]
He has served on the board of directors for the Mel Jr. & Marty Zajac Foundation.[2]
¶ History
Bruchet graduated from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 1967.[1:1] He began practicing medicine in North Vancouver that same year.[3] He received the Raising the Bar Award from the Zajac Ranch for Children on June 6, 2015, an organization for which he had "always offered his medical expertise."[2:1]
He retired in 2019 at the age of 79.[4]
¶ COVID-19
Bruchet was reportedly told by "a number of doulas" that "there had been 13 stillbirths in a 24-hour period at Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver" over the weekend of September 18-19, 2021.[5][4:1]
On November 11, 2021, he participated in a rally in North Vancouver, British Columbia outside the local Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) detachment, during which Bruchet and Daniel Nagase raised awareness over the alleged rise in stillbirths associated with COVID-19 vaccines.[6] The pair spoke with RCMP officers and sought to file a criminal complaint against the executive membership of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC), "alleging conflicts of interest influencing their policies, decisions and statements made to the people of British Columbia."[7][8]
On November 23, 2021, Vancouver Coastal Health issued a series of statements on Twitter dismissing the claims of stillbirths as "rumours and disinformation."[9] A "fact check" published on November 25 by Global News cited VCH data asserting "that from April to late August 2021, there were just four stillbirths across VCH’s seven hospitals," a timeframe that predated the mid-September date during which Bruchet claims the stillbirths occurred.[10]
¶ Arrest
The night of December 7 into the morning of December 8, Bruchet confronted the tenant living in his basement suite over loud music. Bruchet called the police, who attended the scene and spoke to both men. According to Nagase, the tenant threatened to continue making noise and hosting parties for the next three months, which led Bruchet to threaten him with a $10,000 fee "if he trashed Mel's basement suite."[11][12] This interaction was allegedly recorded and circulated by the tenant.
Bruchet was arrested by RCMP the following morning while Nagase was recording an interview at his house with the Western Standard.[11:1] Met by 6 police officers and a mental health nurse, he was involuntarily admitted to the emergency department in handcuffs, apparently based on a complaint made under British Columbia's Mental Health Act.[4:2] Bruchet was held in hospital in order to undergo a PET scan to investigate if he had frontal lobe dementia.[11:2] He was subsequently diagnosed with mania and had his phone taken away. He spent a total of 25 days under psychiatric supervision, during which time he was involuntarily medicated with abilify and loxapine, antipsychotic drugs that are not recommended for use in patients over the age of 65.[13][14] Bruchet subsequently suffered two transient ischemic attacks (TIA). He developed slurred speech and seemed to forget his daughter's name.[15] Despite this, his doctors continued administering the drugs as they felt he "was suffering from mania, narcissism and delusions about the [COVID-19] vaccine."[4:3]
A number of high-profile people spoke out in his defense, including Tessa Lena, Jessica Rose and Mark Trozzi.[16][15:1][17] Nagase and the Peoples of the Salmon hosted a rally in support of Bruchet on December 12, 2021, which also featured Dr. Charles Hoffe, Steven Malthouse, Svetlana Rikoff and David Quinn as speakers.[18]
On December 13, 2021, PolitiFact published a "fact check" related to Bruchet's stillbirth claims.[5:1] The author, Monique Curet, claimed to be responding to an article from the now-defunct Fox26Newshenry, which appears to have been a "fake news" website.[19]
Bruchet "escaped" while on a supervised "day pass" on January 2, 2022. According to Bruchet, this led to an arrest warrant being issued on the order of the hospital's medical director, with friends and family being visited and searched by the RCMP.[4:4]
On January 3, 2022, Bruchet appeared alongside Nagase as a guest in a Children's Health Defense Canada video discussing Bruchet's arrest,[20] and a second such appearance on the Essential Talks podcast.[21]
Bruchet attended an event titled "Trudeau Must Go" on December 10, 2022 outside of the Vancouver Art Gallery.[22][23]
A fundraiser to support Bruchet's legal defence was set up on GiveSendGo, raising a total of $70 as of February 6, 2023.[4:5]
